# [How to build a 2027 engineering headcount budget with LATAM talent](https://blog.nexton.dev/industry/how-to-build-a-2027-engineering-headcount-budget-with-latam-talent)

Most 2027 engineering budgets will be built on cost per head and will break on the calendar. The cost line is the easy part: Nexton's Compensation Report puts the median expected annual compensation of a senior LATAM engineer at about $102,000 in Q3 2026, roughly 60% below the equivalent US role on average and between 50% and 70% for most senior engineering roles. The hard part is the three assumptions underneath it: when the seat fills, what the number includes, and whether the gap will still be there in Q3. Most spreadsheets get at least one wrong.

This piece turns the report into a budget. It is for a CTO or VP of Engineering building the 2027 headcount plan during the Q4 cycle, with a finance partner who will ask where every number came from.

## Key findings

- **The annual budget process typically plays out over Q3, Q4 and Q1**, with Q4 as the period where strategy becomes an operating plan ([Cherry Bekaert, 2025](https://www.cbh.com/insights/articles/cfo-budget-planning-best-practices-a-strategic-guide/)). Implication: the LATAM line gets decided now, with whatever numbers are on the table.
- **~$102,000 per senior seat, with the role medians running from $83,640 (Front End) to $131,640 (Engineering Manager) in Q3 2026.** Implication: one US senior line funds roughly two LATAM senior seats; the exact count depends on the role.
- **Four weeks average from brief to signed offer, first candidate in under 72 hours.** Implication: a seat approved in January is productive in Q1, not "sometime in H1."
- **The savings gap held at about 60% through a year in which the level moved both ways.** Implication: budget the gap as stable; do not build a hedge for it closing.

## What data is this based on?

Nexton's Compensation Report, built from more than 1,500 placements with US companies in USD-denominated senior roles and updated continuously; the figures here are the Q3 2026 data as of October 2026. The report shows median expected annual compensation by role and quarter and does not itemize employer costs or fees; [LATAM engineering compensation by role in 2026](https://blog.nexton.dev/industry/what-is-included-in-a-latam-engineers-annual-cost) has the role medians and percentiles the rows below start from. Time to first candidate and time to offer are Nexton's own delivery figures, and public US references are cited where the comparison needs one.

## How do you set the cost per seat?

Use the role figure from the current quarter, in the employment model you have chosen, with every cost around it accounted for.

The report gives median compensation by role and percentile. Resist the single ratio: "60% cheaper" applied to every seat hides the difference between a Front End median of $83,640 and an Engineering Manager median of $131,640, and between roles the savings against US medians range from about 50% to 70%. For each seat, take the role figure, add the employer costs and employment structure of the model you have chosen, and compare it with your own fully loaded US line for the same role, not with a US base salary. Public US references help calibrate: the BLS median wage for software developers was $135,980 in May 2025, base only ([BLS, August 2026](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/computer-and-information-technology/software-developers.htm)); Levels.fyi's senior median total compensation was $312,000 in 2025 in a big-tech-heavy sample ([Levels.fyi, 2025](https://www.levels.fyi/2025)). Your own line is the one that counts.

What this means for a CTO budgeting a team: one row per seat, with role, model, and the costs listed, so finance can trace every number.

## How do you put time to fill on the calendar?

Start from the date the seat must be productive and work backward.

At Nexton, the first matched candidate arrives in under 72 hours, matched, interested, and engineer-vetted, and the average from brief to signed offer is four weeks. Add the engineer's notice period and two to four weeks of onboarding, and a seat approved in the first week of January is productive in March. A budget that books the full annual cost from January overstates spend; one that assumes a July start for a seat approved in January understates output. Put the start date in the row.

What this means for a CTO budgeting a team: write the brief in December if the seat is needed in Q1. The brief is the long pole; [How to write an engineering brief that hires for judgment, not throughput](https://blog.nexton.dev/industry/how-to-write-an-engineering-brief-that-hires-for-judgment-not-throughput) covers what it should say.

## How do you treat the savings gap?

As a stable input, not as a window that is closing or a hedge you need.

The report's all-roles median rose to $107,640 in Q1 2026, came down to $101,640 in Q2 and held there in Q3, and the average gap against US compensation stayed at about 60% throughout, because senior LATAM compensation on US teams is priced in US demand and moves with it. [Did LATAM engineering compensation go down this year?](https://blog.nexton.dev/industry/did-latam-engineering-compensation-go-down-this-year) covers the trend. For the budget, that means no contingency line for "LATAM gets expensive" and no plan that waits for it to get cheaper.

What this means for a CTO budgeting a team: one assumption, stated once: the gap holds.

## What does the spreadsheet look like?

Six columns per seat, and nothing the plan cannot defend.

1. **Role and seniority**, as the report names it.
2. **Annual cost**, from the current quarter's role median, in the chosen employment model, with the costs around it listed.
3. **Brief date**, when the seat is defined, not when it is approved.
4. **Productive date**, brief date plus four weeks to offer, plus notice, plus onboarding.
5. **2027 spend**, annual cost prorated from the productive date.
6. **US equivalent**, your fully loaded line for the same role, for the comparison finance will ask for.

Then two assumptions at the top: the gap holds, and time to fill is four weeks on average. If either changes, the plan says where.

## What this means if you're hiring in 2027

- **Decide the LATAM line in Q4, with the current quarter's figures.** The budget cycle will not wait for the next one.
- **Budget productive dates, not approval dates.** The difference is a quarter of spend and a quarter of output.
- **Write the briefs before the year ends.** Everything downstream is paced by them.

## How does Nexton do this?

The time-to-fill figures above are Nexton's own, and they hold because of the process behind them: every engineer is interviewed by another engineer before you see the profile, and the written evaluation comes with the candidate. Your engineers can join your team directly or through Nexton, whichever fits the budget you are building. [What does a senior LATAM engineer actually cost in 2026?](https://blog.nexton.dev/industry/what-does-a-senior-latam-engineer-actually-cost-in-2026) has the headline figures to start from.

If you are building the 2027 plan this quarter and want the rows filled with real numbers, it's worth a conversation.

## FAQs

**How much should I budget for a senior nearshore engineer in 2027?**
Start from the current quarter's role median in Nexton's Compensation Report, about $102,000 a year across senior roles in Q3 2026, add the costs of your employment model, and prorate it from the date the seat is productive.

**How long does it take to hire a LATAM engineer?**
At Nexton, the first matched candidate arrives in under 72 hours, matched, interested, and engineer-vetted, and the average from brief to signed offer is four weeks. Add notice period and onboarding to get the productive date.

**Should I add a contingency for LATAM salaries rising?**
The report's average savings gap held at about 60% through a year in which the level moved up and then down. Budget the gap as stable and spend the contingency on time to fill instead.
