Most engineering briefs are still written as a list of a stack, a seniority floor, and a line about "AI experience." That brief describes the engineer the team needed in 2024: someone who produces code quickly in a known set of tools. The job has moved. Across 718 companies, adopting AI agents raised merged pull requests 23% while review time rose 49% and resolved issues barely changed ([Chen & Stratton, August 2026](https://fion.ac/jellyfish.pdf)). The work that now limits delivery is judgment about code, not production of it, and a brief built around production will hire the wrong person with great confidence.

This playbook rewrites the brief. It gives you a structure with six sections, the language that replaces stack lists, and a way to test whether the brief hires for judgment before it goes to a recruiter.

## What do you need before you start?

You need to know why this seat exists, in one sentence, and what will be true in six months if the hire works.

- The outcome the seat owns: a service, a metric, a migration, a review standard.
- The constraint the team actually hits today: review latency, verification gaps, incident load, or genuine lack of hands.
- The systems the hire will have authority over, by name.
- The review and verification numbers for those systems, so the brief can state a target.
- What the team's agents already do well, so the brief does not ask a human to compete with them.

## What does the brief open with?

The outcome and the authority, before any technology.

Why this matters: a stack list is a filter, not a description of work. "Owns the merge standard for the payments service, and brings its change-failure rate under 5% by Q2" tells a strong candidate what the job is and lets a weak one self-select out. It also tells the recruiter what to screen for. DORA's 2025 report describes AI as an amplifier of what a team already is ([DORA, 2025](https://services.google.com/fh/files/misc/2025_state_of_ai_assisted_software_development.pdf)); the brief should say what this hire is meant to amplify.

What good looks like: the first paragraph could be read aloud in a standup and the team would recognize the seat.

## How do you describe the review responsibility?

As a stated share of the role with a measurable standard, not as a courtesy everyone performs.

Why this matters: at Imprint, Will Larson reports median review time going from about 33 minutes to about 77 as pull requests per engineer rose fourfold ([Larson, October 2026](https://lethain.com/small-changes/)). His response was to write the rules for which changes skip human review and route everything else to people who own the standard. That is a responsibility, and it belongs in the brief: "Reviewing authority for services X and Y. Expected 30% of time in review. Owns the automated checks that decide what needs a human." If the seat has no review responsibility, say that too; it changes who applies.

What good looks like: a candidate can tell from the brief whether they will mostly write or mostly judge.

## How do you write the verification requirement?

Ask for evidence of designing checks, not for familiarity with tools.

Why this matters: "experience with AI coding tools" is on nearly every résumé and separates nobody. What the team needs is someone who can specify how a change will be verified before an agent writes it: tests, contracts, acceptance criteria the agent never sees. Birgitta Böckeler's distinction is useful here: a harness is "everything in an AI agent except the model itself," guides that constrain and sensors that check ([Böckeler, April 2026](https://martinfowler.com/articles/harness-engineering.html)). The brief should ask for someone who has built sensors. Phrase it as a question the interview will answer: "Describe a verification setup you designed and what it caught."

What good looks like: the requirement reads as a task the candidate has done, not a product they have opened.

## What replaces the years-of-experience floor?

A description of the judgment the seat requires, with the decisions it will make named.

Why this matters: years predict exposure, not skill at reviewing code someone else wrote. Replace "7+ years" with the decisions: "Decides which changes to the billing path can merge without a second reviewer. Decides when a generated migration is safe to run." Then say what evidence you will accept: a review the candidate wrote, a verification design, a postmortem they authored. If you want the fuller argument for redefining seniority, see [How to define "senior" when agents compress the output gap](https://blog.nexton.dev/industry/how-to-define-senior-when-agents-compress-the-output-gap).

What good looks like: two candidates with the same years but different judgment would read the brief differently.

## How do you test the brief before it ships?

Hand it to a senior on the team and ask them to describe the first month of the job from the text alone.

Why this matters: if they describe writing features, the brief is still a production brief. If they describe owning a standard, reviewing, and designing checks, it is a judgment brief. Then hand it to a recruiter and ask what they would screen for; if the answer is a tool list, rewrite the requirement section. Finally, check the interview plan matches: a judgment brief needs a review exercise, which [The bottleneck moved from writing code to reviewing it](https://blog.nexton.dev/industry/the-bottleneck-moved-from-writing-code-to-reviewing-it-and-that-changes-who-you-hire) describes, and a conversation about AI work, which [How to evaluate AI experience when hiring engineers](https://blog.nexton.dev/industry/how-to-evaluate-ai-experience-when-hiring-engineers) covers.

What good looks like: brief, screen, and interview all test the same three things.

## What are the common mistakes?

- **Adding "AI experience" to the 2024 brief.** It filters nobody and describes nothing.
- **Hiding the review load.** Candidates find out in month one and resent it; say it up front.
- **Asking for tools instead of evidence.** A product name is exposure. A verification design is skill.
- **Writing the brief alone.** The senior who will review the hire's work should co-write the judgment section.

## How does Nexton do this?

A good brief is what makes matching work. Every engineer Nexton proposes is interviewed by another engineer before you see the profile, and the written evaluation comes with the candidate, so when a brief names the decisions a seat will make, the interviewer can test for exactly those. The first matched candidate arrives in under 72 hours, matched, interested, and engineer-vetted, and the average from brief to signed offer is four weeks; both depend on the brief saying what judgment the seat needs.

If your 2027 briefs still open with a stack list, it's worth a conversation.

## FAQs

**Should the brief mention which AI tools the team uses?**
Yes, as context, not as a requirement. Say what the team's agents already handle, so the candidate understands what the human in this seat is for.

**How long should an engineering brief be?**
One page. Outcome and authority, review responsibility, verification requirement, the decisions the seat makes, evidence you accept, and how the team works. A longer brief usually means the seat is not defined.

**Can I use this structure for junior roles?**
Yes, with the authority scaled down and explicit learning time written in. A junior brief should name who reviews their work and what they are expected to be able to decide alone by month six.
