A senior LATAM engineer costs about $102,000 a year on average, but no one hires an average. In Q3 2026, the median expected annual compensation in Nexton's Compensation Report runs from $83,640 for a Front End engineer to $131,640 for an Engineering Manager, and the savings against the equivalent US role range from about 39% to 71% depending on the role. This piece puts the role-by-role figures on one page, with the US comparison and what each gap means for a 2027 plan.

It is for a CTO, VP of Engineering, or finance partner who needs a number per seat, not a ratio for the whole team.

## Key findings

- **Eight roles, a $54,600 spread.** Q3 2026 medians: Engineering Manager $131,640 · SRE/DevOps $113,640 · Data Scientist $105,720 · Full Stack $101,640 · Back End $95,640 · Product Manager $95,640 · Front End $83,640 · Data Analyst $77,040. Implication: a budget built on one number is wrong for every seat but one.
- **The savings are widest in Product Management and management roles (about 70%) and narrowest in SRE/DevOps (about 39%).** Implication: the gap tracks the US figure for the role, not the LATAM one.
- **Percentiles matter more than medians for senior seats.** Across all roles, the 75th percentile sits at $113,640 and the 90th at $131,640 in Q3 2026. Implication: budget the percentile that matches the seniority you are hiring.
- **The figures are expected compensation, not fully loaded cost.** Implication: compare them with the salary component of your own line, then add the same costs on both sides.

## What data is this based on?

Nexton's Compensation Report, built from more than 1,500 placements with US companies in USD-denominated senior roles and updated continuously; the figures here are the Q3 2026 data as of October 2026. The report tracks median expected annual compensation by role and quarter, with 25th, 75th and 90th percentiles, and compares each role with a public US median (Levels.fyi; Glassdoor for two roles). The roles below are the ones with Q3 2026 data in the report.

## What does each role cost in Q3 2026?

Medians first, then the US comparison the report draws.

| Role | LATAM median, Q3 2026 | US median (report's reference) | Savings |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Engineering Manager | $131,640 | $442,500 | ~70% |
| SRE/DevOps | $113,640 | $185,000 | ~39% |
| Data Scientist | $105,720 | $343,750 | ~69% |
| Full Stack | $101,640 | $300,000 | ~66% |
| Back End | $95,640 | $233,750 | ~59% |
| Product Manager | $95,640 | $325,000 | ~71% |
| Front End | $83,640 | $240,000 | ~65% |
| Data Analyst | $77,040 | not compared in the report | — |

Two things stand out. First, the LATAM figures cluster: six of the eight roles sit between $83,640 and $113,640, a narrower band than the US side, where the same roles span $185,000 to $442,500. Second, the US reference is a big-tech-weighted median, so the savings column is a comparison of medians, not a quote; your own fully loaded line is the number that counts. [What does a senior LATAM engineer actually cost in 2026?](https://blog.nexton.dev/industry/what-does-a-senior-latam-engineer-actually-cost-in-2026) covers the headline figure and the public US references.

What this means for a CTO budgeting a team: one row per seat, with the role median and the percentile you are actually hiring at.

## Why is the gap so different between roles?

Because the US side moves more than the LATAM side.

SRE/DevOps is the clearest case: the LATAM median is the second highest in the report at $113,640, but the US reference is the lowest at $185,000, so the saving is about 39%. Product Management is the mirror image: a LATAM median of $95,640 against a US reference of $325,000 gives about 71%. The LATAM market prices senior roles within a fairly tight band set by US demand; the US market prices them very differently by discipline. The gap for any role is mostly a fact about the US figure.

What this means for a CTO budgeting a team: do not expect the same ratio across a team. Platform and infrastructure seats save less; product, data and management seats save more.

## Which percentile should you budget?

The one that matches the seniority of the seat, not the median by default.

Across all roles in Q3 2026, the report's 25th percentile is $89,640, the median $101,640, the 75th percentile $113,640 and the 90th $131,640. A senior engineer who will own a system is a 75th-percentile hire in most searches; a staff-level or lead profile sits at the 90th. Budgeting the median for a seat you intend to fill at the 75th percentile underfunds it by about $12,000 before any negotiation starts. The report shows the same percentiles by role, which is where the seat-level number should come from.

What this means for a CTO budgeting a team: write the percentile next to the role in the brief; it is the single input that most changes the cost line.

## How did the roles move this year?

In different directions, which is why the by-role view matters.

Between Q1 and Q3 2026, Back End came down from $107,640 to $95,640 and Front End from $107,640 to $83,640, while SRE/DevOps rose from $107,640 to $113,640 and Engineering Manager from $119,640 to $131,640. Full Stack held at $101,640 all year. The all-roles median moved up, then down, then sideways; underneath it, individual roles did very different things. [Did LATAM engineering compensation go down this year?](https://blog.nexton.dev/industry/did-latam-engineering-compensation-go-down-this-year) covers the trend and what it means for timing.

What this means for a CTO budgeting a team: use the current quarter's role figure, and expect it to be revised; the report updates quarterly.

## What this means if you're hiring in 2027

- **Budget by role and percentile, not by the headline.** The spread between roles is $54,600; between the median and the 90th percentile, $30,000.
- **Expect the ratio to vary by discipline.** Infrastructure roles save less against US figures; product, data and management roles save more.
- **Compare compensation with compensation, then load both sides.** The report's figures are expected annual compensation in USD; your fully loaded line is yours to build. [How to build a 2027 engineering headcount budget with LATAM talent](https://blog.nexton.dev/industry/how-to-build-a-2027-engineering-headcount-budget-with-latam-talent) has the spreadsheet.

The full report, with every role, percentile and quarter, is at [nexton.dev/compensation-report](https://nexton.dev/compensation-report).

## How does Nexton do this?

The figures are Nexton's own placements, so every engineer behind them was interviewed by another engineer before the client saw the profile, with the written evaluation delivered alongside the candidate. That is why the data describes senior, USD-denominated roles specifically: it is the segment Nexton places, and the one the report is built to price. Your engineers can join your team directly or through Nexton, whichever fits how you build.

If you need a number per seat for 2027, by role and percentile, it's worth a conversation.

## FAQs

**How much does a senior back end engineer in Latin America cost?**
The median expected annual compensation for a Back End engineer in Nexton's Compensation Report is $95,640 in Q3 2026, against a US reference median of $233,750, about 59% lower.

**Which LATAM engineering role has the largest savings versus the US?**
Product Management, at about 71% below the US reference in Q3 2026, followed by Engineering Manager at about 70%. SRE/DevOps has the smallest gap, about 39%, because the US reference for that role is the lowest in the comparison.

**Should I budget the median or a higher percentile for a senior hire?**
The percentile that matches the seniority of the seat. Across all roles in Q3 2026 the median is $101,640, the 75th percentile $113,640 and the 90th $131,640; a senior owner of a system is usually a 75th-percentile hire.
