Nearshore vs Offshore: Why the Difference Matters

The two terms get used interchangeably, and the confusion costs real money. The difference is one variable — time zone overlap — and it changes how engineering teams actually work.

What is the difference?

Offshore means distant time zones: your working day and your engineer's barely touch, so collaboration is asynchronous by default. Nearshore means adjacent time zones: LATAM engineers share most of the US working day, so collaboration is live. Same continent-level economics, opposite working models.

Why does overlap change engineering outcomes?

Three moments decide it. Standups: a nearshore engineer attends yours; an offshore engineer reads the notes. Incidents: when production breaks at 2 PM ET, a nearshore engineer is on the call; an offshore engineer is asleep. Pairing and review: live sessions compress feedback loops that async threads stretch across days. None of this is about talent — it's about physics.

When does offshore still make sense?

Genuinely follow-the-sun operations — 24/7 support coverage, or well-partitioned work with low coordination needs. If handoffs are rare and specs are stable, distance costs little. Most product engineering is the opposite: high-coordination, spec-evolving work where overlap is the multiplier.
